Match report
Dunvant visited Narberth’s aptly named Spring Gardens ground on the best day of weather so far this year seeking a first win against the Otters in 10 years. Dunvant had a number of players unavailable due to injury or work commitments and had to dig deep into the 2nd XV to be able to name a travelling squad of 22.Narberth are flying high in 2nd place with 6 home wins from 8 and 8 away wins from 10 and are certainly targeting the runners up spot with Pontypool almost out of sight with Tata Steel and Beddau also chasing them hard.
With traffic delays due to roadworks on the A40, Dunvant did not arrive until 2.30 meaning a hasty warm up for both sides and a delayed kick off at 3.00p.m.
Dunvant however started the better of the two sides. Dunvant kicked off and quickly scored the first points with a try from right wing Mark Robbins, converted by outside half Sam Evans for a 0-7 lead. Dunvant kept pressing hard and on 9 minutes stunned Narberth with a superb kick into open space on halfway from Sam Evans who sped through to collect the ball and score in the left corner, narrowly missing the conversion but Dunvant leading 0-12. Narberth were stunned into action and saw inside centre Jack Price score a hat trick of tries supported by a right wing Liam Williams try and outside centre Jo Hutchings also scoring, and with outside half Jonathan Rogers converting the last three tries Narberth had a try bonus point in the bag and a half time lead of 31-12.
From the restart Jack Price got his 4th try which was converted, Dunvant responded with a try from flanker Adam Gregory for 38-17 but the rest of the match was a display of running rugby by the Otters. 5 more tries with 2 from star man Jack Price for 6 in total, a brace from replacement flanker Dewi Williams and the 11th try from left wing Gethin Gibby. 5 more conversions from the accurate boot of Jonathan Rogers saw Narberth win 73-17 and comfortably remain in second place narrowing the gap to Pontypool who suffered a shock 30-17 defeat at Cardiff Met. For Dunvant their Championship battle has ended with 3 games still to play and Dunvant will be plying their trade in Division 1 again next season. All credit to Dunvant, they have met the challenge of the Championship head on, but with semi professional clubs paying big money to their players, it is not a level playing field and there is no shame in their relegation. We could not have asked any more of our primarily home grown boys. The WRU need to find a solution so all clubs are singing off the same hymn sheet.
