Huw Prosser

Huw Prosser

Dunvant RFC1 Sep 2022 - 22:20

Tribute by Julian Campbell and Bob Davies

Huw Prosser sadly passed away last week aged 73. Huw attended Sketty Junior School and then Dunvant Secondary Modern with Bob Davies, Stuart Jones, Bob Hewitt, Colin James and Graham Sambrook also Keith Roberts who later played for Waunarlwydd, the School intermediate team made it to the final against Bishop Gore but sadly lost.
After leaving school Huwie became a well respected local builder and bricklayer. Huw’s passion and enthusiasm for rugby was always evident leading to him being made captain of Dunvant Youth for the 1966/67 season and winning the Swansea & District Cup, the first honours for a youth team at Dunvant in a side including Stuart Jones, Bob Hewitt, Roger Slack, Colin James, Ernie Macey and Dai Davies.
A tactical scrum half who later also played at both hooker and back row, captaining the club during the 1969/70 season. Huw later played in the opening match at Broadacre in 1975 against Swansea and continued playing into the 1980’s as the club started its progression in the West Wales Leagues and then later with the Vets.
Huw attended a WRU youth coaching course under the guidance of Carwyn James in Aberystwyth. Huwie read many coaching books mainly from South African and New Zealand and brought many moves which were very successful, some are still used by the club’s teams to this day such as Harry’s ball.
In 1977 Huwie went with Tudor Davies and Mark Hancock to New Zealand for the Lions tour, the hospitality was great unlike the weather, however, remarkably he was able to watch all the matches on that Tour.
Huw’s mum, the legendary Mrs Prosser used to help with the rugby jersey laundering along with Dai Davies’s mother, when Dunvant became one of the first sides to introduce numbers on the shirts, there was a loud yell at the first scrum and it was discovered that the pins had been left in the shirts.
After finishing coaching Huw was an avid supporter of Dunvant RFC, always offering his knowledgeable and critical advice to one and all no matter who it was.
Huw will be greatly missed not least by his daughter Katy and her husband Craig together with grandchildren Suzy and Ioan to whom everyone at Dunvant RFC passes their deepest condolences.
Funeral will take place at Swansea Crematorium on Wednesday September 14th at 10-30am, followed by light refreshments at Dunvant RFC.
