In a gale force wind and tightly contested game Gorseinon ground at a 27-23 win over Dunvant at Broadacre which makes Felinfoel Champions of 1 West.

When Dunvant last met Gorseinon at Broadacre it was Boxing Day 2017 and Gorseinon took away the spoils winning 21-12. Dunvant got a 20-13 win at the Welfare ground in March but saw Gorseinon fight back from 20-0 down in 20 minutes to get a losing bonus point 20-13. Gorseinon’s big 37-0 win at Hendy on Wednesday night saw them arriving at Broadacre as the top form side with 5 consecutive earning 24 points to sit in 6th place, Dunvant ahead in the table only by virtue of 58 tries to 57.
Gorseinon kicked off playing into a gale force wind blowing from the St Hilary end right down the pitch towards the Dunvant end. With the wind in support Dunvant were straight into Gorseinon’s 22 and within 2 minutes centre Mitchell Ford scored an easy run in, converted by Adam Williams-Parry for a 7-0 lead. From the restart Gorseinon got straight back up to level the score at 7-7 with a try by flanker Ben Cross converted by Liam Popham. Then Dunvant edged ahead with a penalty, followed almost immediately with a try by lock forward Ollie Beck, converted by Adam Williams –Parry who also scored another penalty with 8 minutes of the first half remaining for a half time score of Dunvant 20 Gorseinon 7. In the commentary box we felt given the strong wind that wouldn’t be a big enough lead and so it turned out. In a mirror of Dunvant’s first half start Gorseinon repeated the feat with a great try by full back Niall Popham, converted by brother Liam for 20-14.
On the hour Gorseinon’s big strong pack scored a push over try under the posts, easily converted for Gorseinon to edge into a 20-21 lead. This was becoming a right tussle with Dunvant defending hard and with the game into the final quarter Adam Williams-Parry converted a penalty to put Dunvant back in the lead 23-21. However with full time approaching Dunvant were conceding penalties as they tried to halt the incessant attacks and two more penalties for Liam Popham secured the victory 23-27 for Gorseinon with Dunvant having to settle for a welldeserved losing bonus point. With Dunvant losing the result ensured that Felinfoel were crowned Division 1 West Champions for the 2nd successive season.
