The first half , playing with a strong wind was quite attritional . Fera in 10th place and battling to stay clear of the relegation slots had tweeted they are not going down without a fight and followed up on their word. In the first 25 minutes the ref spoke to both captains about discipline, spoke to Fera centre Ryan Evans on 8 minutes and rewarded him with a yellow card for a high tackle, spoke again to Fera’s captain about discipline, and on 25 minutes rewarded flanker John Evans with a red card for use of an elbow so Fera were down to 14 men for the major part of the game.
Dunvant’s first score came on 8 minutes from the penalty awaded for Evans’ high tackle which full back Adam Williams-Parry was successful. From the restart, Dunvant were pinged for blocking and outside half Gareth James levelled the score for Fera at 3-3. With 32 minutes played, Fera had hardly mounted any attack into Dunvant territory but when they did get to our 22, Dunvant turned the ball over and a break by Adam with winger Tom Davies in support saw Tom run over in the corner and onwards to ground the ball under the posts, Adam converting for 10-3. Three minutes later, Dunvant made another breakthrough and centre Scott Watkins ran in under the posts, Adam converting for 17-3. The ref had yet another chat with both captains about the need for discipline and shortly after blew up for half time.
The second half was a superb display of sunshine rugby by the Dunvant team to delight the large crowd and sponsors up in the hospitality box. Adam Williams-Parry made one of this trademark zig zag runs to score our third try under the posts which he duly converted for 24-3. Showing consistency in decisions the referee then carded Dunvant’s lock forward Jordan Jackson to bring both teams to 14 a side for 10 minutes, but this was of no benefit to Fera. Tom Davies scored his second try which earned Dunvant a try bonus point and Adam converted for 31-3 and two minutes later Club Captain Mitchell Ford found acres of space to score under the posts, Adam converting for 38-3. Try 6 came four minutes later from Tom Davies converted for 45-3 and Scott Watkins widened the score on the hour to 45-3 with try number 7. 65 minutes saw a break by outside half Richard Lewis with Craig Hawkins in support scoring the 8th try, Adam converting for 59-3. On 70 minutes Aled Lewis playing for once on the left wing scored try 9, Adam converting for 66-3 and almost immediately, Captain Mitchell Ford could have scored but generously passed the ball to centre Scott Watkins to give Scotty his hat trick try, Adam converting for 73-3. Although Dunvant were having a field day, in fairness the Fera boys still on the pitch were giving their all and scrum half Tom Barry restored some pride for them with a try converted by Gareth James for 73-8. Dunvant responded immediately with a great break by Richard Lewis, Mitch in support again and then Scotty getting his fourth try, Dunvant’s 11th but Adam was unable to convert from the touchline. Fera responded again with a try from replacement Dan White and the final score of the afternoon went to wing Tom Davies, his fourth try and Dunvant’s 12th, although Adam missed the conversion. Final score 83-15 and a much needed bonus point to help secure 4th place with Waunarlwydd and Maesteg Quins coming up fast behind.
The Dunvant Rugby Club Singers awarded their Dunvant Man of the Match to both guys who scored 4 tries apiece, Tom Davies and Scott Watkins.
It appears that Fera who suffered injuries throughout the game ran out of replacements and played the last 20 minutes with 12 men. We wish them luck in their fight for survival, As Division 3 champions last season it has been a tough season in 1 West for them. They are still in 10th but 4 points clear of Mumbles who have 2 games in hand on them so they have more battles still to come. With Skewen losing their Swalec Plate Semi Final 26-12 to Ystrad Rhondda, this means we can now confirm that our final game of the season will be at home to Skewen on Saturday 2nd May. How apt is it that the season opened with a trip to Skewen where we lost 24-13 and now we play them again at Broadacre for our final game of 2014-15.Another cracker on the horizon!
